What is the principle behind the "eye protection mode" of mobile phones? Is it really useful?
Time: Nov 04,2024
Brushing my phone was a momentary pleasure,
But over time,
The eyes began to protest.
Turn on the "eye protection mode" on your phone
Can we rest assured now?
What is the 'eye protection mode'?
When we use our mobile phones, the screen emits a strong white light, which is composed of three types of light: red, green, and blue. The eye protection mode uses software algorithms to highlight the red and green colors in RGB tones, while reducing the blue color, resulting in the yellow light we see.
From this perspective, the essence of the "eye protection mode" is actually to filter out a portion of blue light. Blue light is a type of visible light with a wavelength between 400-500 nanometers. It has the characteristics of short wavelength and high energy, and can penetrate the lens of the eye to reach the retina, increasing the oxidation reaction of the retina and producing harmful free radicals, which can harm our eyes.
Blue light penetrates the crystalline lens
But not all blue light is harmful. Blue light with wavelengths within 415-455 nanometers has been shown to damage the retina in some experiments. Blue light between 455 and 500 nanometers is beneficial, playing important roles in regulating circadian rhythms, producing dark vision, and affecting refractive development.
Is the 'eye protection mode' really useful?
Why do my eyes still feel uncomfortable when my phone is in eye protection mode for a long time?
Although the screen turns yellow and blue light decreases when we activate eye protection mode, it does not mean that blue light will disappear. That is to say, electronic products in eye protection mode only "block" some blue light, and using this method of adjusting visual light to protect the eyes can only have a very weak effect to some extent.
Furthermore, the color temperature adjustment of the eye protection mode and the principle of the seesaw are the same. After excessively reducing the blue light, the red and green light will be higher than the blue light. However, excessive red and green light can cause the screen to turn yellow or even distort.
Moreover, if the screen is too dark, it can also have other effects on the eyes. For example, the pupil can control the amount of light entering the eye and adjust its size based on the strength of the light
When the external light becomes stronger, in order to prevent too much light from entering the eyes and causing harm, the pupils will become smaller;
When the external light is relatively weak, in order to allow more light to enter the eyes and make us see clearly, the pupils will become larger.
So, when the eye protection mode is turned on and the screen is too dark, in order to increase the amount of light entering the eyes, the pupils will become larger. Having the pupils in a tense and dilated state for a long time can cause the eyes to become tense, tired, and sleepy, making it more difficult to use them. In the long run, it may also deepen the degree of myopia.
Considering eye distance and ambient lighting comprehensively
And factors such as the duration of phone usage,
The protective effect of eye protection mode on the eyes
It's actually quite limited.
Long term use of the eyes,
There may be other injuries to the eyes
Long term use of mobile phones can lead to these issues
xerophthalmia
Staring at the screen for a long time, being too focused, and continuously tightening the eye muscles, unconsciously reduces the frequency of blinking, which can easily cause dryness and discomfort in the eyes.
